Decker's parents relocated to Louisiana in the early 1990s. Decker won a regional talent competition with a rendition that was a cover of the Patsy Montana song I Want to Be a Cowboy's Sweetheart when she was only nine. Decker was able to move to Georgia when she was 15. When she started writing songs regularly, she went to Nashville and visited music companies and record labels with the hoping to secure a deal. She was just 17 when she gained the attention of the representative from independent label Big Yellow Dog Records who started selling her music to labels and artists. Decker's demos, which were heard by Mercury Records president David Massey and then passed to L.A. Reid of Island/Def Jam group-affiliated label group L.A. Reid was able to sign Decker to a contract. Jessie James, her moniker for the album she debuted with that title in August 2009, was self-titled. Jessie James, which featured Wanted as a hit single on the Top 40 Singles Charts was moderately successful. Decker has always been a country performer, but the album was released and promoted was designed with pop audiences in mind. Two more singles off the album stiffed Decker struggled with the label's management for more control over her music, and her next single Boys in the Summer was more of a country-centric release. The second album that Decker released under the title Daughter of a Gypsy or Sweet American Dreams was shelved by Mercury and, after the release of three singles fared poorly on the charts for country. Decker was released from her contract.
